End date:The city of Madrid already glows with Christmas lights. The streets of the Spanish capital announce the Christmas festivities in the form of 7.5 million light bulbs, some 700,000 more than last year. More light, but less energy consumption (99.5% of the lights are low energy) and less pollution. These are the three criteria on which the sustainability of this year's Christmas lighting, installed across 170 areas of the capital city, is based. The timetable determining the number of hours they are on for has been adjusted to achieve a 27% decrease in energy consumption and a 25% reduction in cost. This saving will avoid the release 87 tonnes of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere.
